  • Graphic Design Entry Portfolio Review Workshop is Wednesday, September 20, 6:30 – 7:30 PM in Stafford Hall room 200
    • During this workshop Graphic Design faculty will review the application process and portfolio requirements. All students intending to apply to the Graphic Design concentration this fall must attend!
    • Portfolios must be turned in to the Dean’s Office (Giles Hall, second floor) by Friday, November 10 at 12 p.m.
  • We are Photo Concentration Interest Meeting will be held Friday, October 20 from 10 – 11:30 a.m. in Briscoe Hall room 215.
    • Digital portfolios are due on Monday, December 11 by 11:59 p.m.
  • Is your work on exhibition? Did you win a cool contest or earn an awesome internship? If so, we’d love to hear about it! Contact Ms. Jackson (; 662-325-8590) to find out how you can share your story with your fellow classmates.
  • The Department of Art (DoA) is on Twitter and Instagram! Follow us @MSStateNicole to stay up-to-date on the latest DoA news, events, and recruiting events.
  • The College of Art, Architecture, and Design (CAAD) has a new website! Visit to hear alumni and current student testimonials, or see videos from class trips.
  • Great to Know emails are moving to the web! In an effort to keep Great to Know emails short and easy to read, weekly emails will only contain new information.

Can’t Miss Opportunity to Meet the Author and Illustrator

  • “An evil darkness armed with sticky tentacles attempts to overtake the world. A very small girl with great strength takes matters into her own hands. Meet the seven-fingered girl.”
    • Legend is a children’s book written by alum Julie McAlpin and illustrated by our very own Carly Melton (Fine Arts)! There will be a book signing at the Barnes and Noble on campus, this Saturday, September 2, from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. Additional information is outlined in the flyer here. Exhibition Opportunity

  • The University of Tennessee at Martin is sponsoring Bellwethers 2017, a regional art competition, this fall! This Juried Exhibition of Collegiate Student Art will be on display at the West Tennessee Regional Art Center in Humboldt, Tennessee from October 24 through November 21, 2017.
    • Interested students should submit their entry form, fees, and digital files of their work to the University of Tennessee at Martin Fine Arts office by September 29.

Gallery Exhibition

  • The Mississippi Museum of Art celebrates Mississippi’s Bicentennial year by sharing works from its collection in an initiative titled Art Across Mississippi: Twelve Exhibitions Twelve Communities.
    • Narratives of the Land will be on display in the Cullis Wade Depot Art Gallery (next to Barnes & Nobles) from September 1 through September 29.
    • The Gallery reception will be held on Thursday, September 7 from 5 – 6:30 p.m. in the Cullis Wade Depot Art Gallery.

 Student Group Meetings

  • Please join The Fiber Club tonight (August 30) in Howell Hall 109 at 6 pm for the first Fiber Arts club meeting of the year. We will be talking about what we want to do this semester, and as always, we will start the year with knitting. 
    • No previous experience necessary. We will provide any supplies. 
  • MSU Open Figure Drawing Sessions holds a free weekly life drawing event every Tuesday, from 6 – 8 p.m. in Briscoe Hall. Membership is open, meaning that you can come and go as you are able and do not have to attend a certain number of sessions each semester. There is no teaching during our sessions; our objective is to provide a place where you can practice drawing the figure in a low stress, super chill environment (we think we’re pretty chill). 
    • On September 12 starting at 9 p.m. (that’s on a Tuesday), MSU Figure Drawing will be the featured artists at Rick’s Cafe Art Night. We will be drawing some of the people in attendance (see what I meant about us being pretty chill? We party on a school night).
