About the artist:

“Jave Yoshimoto was born in Tokyo, Japan on September 17, 1974. His parents are Chinese and he immigrated to California when he was nine years old. He has lived all over the United States and received his Bachelors of Art in Studio Art from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2004. He received a Masters of Art in Art Therapy in 2007 and he has also received a Post-baccalaureate Certificate in Painting and Drawing in 2008 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He then received a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting at Syracuse University in 2012.

Yoshimoto worked as an art therapist in Chicago, Illinois in 2008. He has been an Artist in Residence in a number of different states since 2010. These include Nebraska, New York, Oregon, Vermont, and Wyoming. Yoshimoto was a Graduate Instructor in drawing and painting at Syracuse University from 2010 to 2012. He worked as a teaching artist for Arts Corps in Seattle Public Schools before moving on to work as the Director of Studio Art, and Assistant Professor of Art at Northwestern Oklahoma State University from 2013-2015. In 2015, Yoshimoto accepted the position as an Assistant Professor of Art and the Foundations Coordinator at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. In 2015, he was nominated and received the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Painters and Sculptors grant, and is currently an artist fellow at Tulsa Artist Fellowship in 2017. Since 2012, Yoshimoto has exhibited in 115 national and international exhibitions and 16 solo exhibitions as of 2017.”

Ø 2018 Fine Art Entry Portfolio Workshop will be held Thursday, February 15 from 11 – 12 p.m. in Briscoe Hall room 204 (Printmaking Studio).

o Portfolios must be turned into the main Art office in Freeman Hall by Friday, March 2, 2018 at 12 p.m.

Ø Update your General Scholarship application and complete your FAFSA form to be eligible for current student scholarships!

Ø Great to Know emails are moving to the web! In an effort to keep Great to Know emails short and easy to read, weekly emails will only contain new information.

Exhibition Opportunity
Ø The Starkville Area Arts Council (SAAC) will host U40: An Exhibition for Young Artists opening reception on Saturday, February 24. This first annual juried exhibition is open to young artists between the ages of 18 and 40, and will be judged by alumnae Belle Naugher, Executive Director of Gumtree Museum of Art in Tupelo, MS.

o The exhibition will be on display for one month at 929 Coffee Bar.

Upcoming Student Group Activities
Ø MSU Figure Drawing hosts a free weekly life drawing session every Tuesday from 6 – 8 p.m. in Freeman 209. Anyone who is interested in sketching, drawing, painting or sculpting the human figure is welcome. Ø The LGBTQ+ Union student group is hard at work planning Starkville’s first Pride event! Starkville Pride festivities will be held on Friday, March 23 and Saturday, March 24.

o Starkville Pride will include a Queer Arts Market on March 24 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. next to the fire department, and will showcase queer art and artists, and they are looking for vendors (non-LGBTQ allies are welcome)! There will be a $20 fee to participate. If you are interested in being a vendor at Starkville Pride, contact Cheyenne Schettino at cs2734@msstate.edu, and follow @starkvillepride across social media for information and updates. (MSU Figure Drawing will be participating!)

Ø The LGBTQ+ Union is also working on a zine showcasing queer creators of visual arts, poetry, literature, short stories, etc. The subject of submissions does not have to be explicitly LGBTQ+ related. The deadline to submit to is February 11 and there is no fee to do so. Interested students should email submissions to lgbtqunionzine@gmail.com.

The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi would like to invite you to submit work to their juried art show in August 2018. Titled Echoes of Ohr, the show will reflect the creative spirit that made George Ohr such a unique artist. 

Interested students and faculty should review the attached application, and submit their work by April 30, 2018 to avoid a late entry fee (applications will be accepted until May 10, 2018 with a late fee).

There are currently 171 employers attending! A list of employers is attached!  Although Day 2 is designated for CAAD and Engineering, be sure to look at Day 1 for recruiters interested in All Majors!

Tips to prepare for Career Days: 

  • Update your Connections profile; we will print a nametag for you using that information.
  • Look in Connections for list of employers attending (both days).
  • Prepare your business professional attire; business casual is appropriate!
  • Print plenty of resumes and work samples/portfolios and print them on resume paper.

The Fiber Arts Club at MSU will be having its first meeting of the semester Wednesday, January 24 (tomorrow) at 6 p.m.  in Howell Hall room 109. All are welcome, no experience is necessary, just a desire to learn about or an enjoyment of the fiber arts. We will be knitting tomorrow, but you may bring any type of project you are working on. No tools or supplies necessary. These will be provided. See you there!

Artist, Art Advisory Board Member, and Author, William Dunlap, will deliver a riveting discussion about his latest book “Short Mean Fiction: The Evolution of Art into Writing” on Thursday, January 25 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. in Fowlkes Auditorium (Colvard Student Union, 3rd Floor). 

Mr. Dunlap will sign copies of his book at the end of this Artist Talk! We will have complimentary copies of Short Mean Fiction: Words and Pictures (Nautilus Press, 2016) available for signing!
