Franklin Sirmans, curator of contemporary art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, will visit MSU’s Sculpture Studios May 17th. Sirmans is coming to view the work of a sculpture student, Causey Cato, as well as work by Assistant Professor Critz Campbell. Mr. Sirmans shortlisted Ms. Cato and Professor Campbell as candidates for the Mississippi Museum of Art’s 2011 Mississippi Invitational. As guest curator for the show, Mr Sirman’s will visit artists’ studios across the state to select participants for the show.

“I am so proud of Causey,” said Professor Campbell, “and honored that Mr. Sirmans will judge our work not as student and teacher but equally as artists.”

Welcome to the Freak Show

Mississippi State University’s Department of Art invites you to the MSU Graphic Design BFA Senior Show, Welcome to the Freak Show, which is opening Thursday, April 14th through Thursday, April 22nd in the McComas Hall Art Gallery on Mississippi State University campus. Astonishing work from twenty-one seniors will be displayed throughout the week, including posters, advertising campaigns, original typefaces, web design, editorial layouts, illustrations, identity, packages, self-promotional materials and more.

McComas Hall Art Gallery hours are Tuesday through Thursday 10:00am-4:00pm. There will also be a reception in the art gallery to honor these talented, hard working students on Tuesday, April 19th at 5:30pm. All participants’ complete portfolio books will be featured that night for your enjoyment.

MSU Students in Best of College Photography 2011

Three photography majors will be published in the Best of College Photography 2011 hosted by Photographer’s Forum magazine.  Steven Joshlin from Tippah, Mississippi, Heidi Robinson from Madison, Mississippi, and Ioana Demian from Romania each placed as a finalist in the 31st Annual Student Photography Contest sponsored by Nikon, USA.

Over 3500 students participated worldwide.  The jurors for this year’s competition were Andrew Davidhazy from School of Photo Arts and Sciences, Rochester Institue of Technology; Steve La Voie from the Art Center College and Design, Pasadena; and Marcia Rubenstein who is the program director for the MFA degree in photography at the Brooks Institute, Santa Barbara.

“I am not surprised that these students were selected as finalists,” said Professor Marita Gootee, the area coordinator for photography in the Department of Art at Mississippi State University. “They are all exceptional students and extremely talented.”

The graphic design program continues to impress HOW Magazine. Each month HOW picks ten inspirational websites from around the world. This month, it selected two websites made by MSU graphic designers: Professor Jude Landry and Rob Toombs, a senior in the graphic design program.
