A reception was held Thurs. evening (Sept. 13) in the Bob and Kathy Luke Library in Giles Hall for Department of Art Professor Peter Bain’s exhibit, Writing Knowledge: Process and Product.

Bain’s parents drove from Tuscaloosa, Ala., for the event, and representatives from across campus came out to enjoy a look at Bain’s work.

Writing Knowledge is a limited edition book dedicated to the written word and its preservation in physical form. It is a showcase of handwriting and calligraphy, containing quotations in three languages.

Bain said the idea for the book, which was proposed in fall 2009, started as education but ended up expanding to include language and writing.  Quotes in the book discuss art, freedom of the press and education.  Bain also included a quote by Thomas Jefferson, one by Thomas Carlyle discussing preservation and others he thought brought meaning to the book.

Work in the exhibition includes alphabets and notes made during the project.

Funding was provided through the MSU Artist Incentive Program.

Bain’s work will be on display through Oct. 23.
