Photographer Betty Press signs a copy of her book, I Am
Because We Are: African Wisdom in Image and Word, for Robbyn Weaver, a student in Professor Lori Neuenfeldt’s Art History class.

Photographer Betty Press and her husband attended a book signing and reception in the Colvard Student Union Art Gallery on Sept. 27 from 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Press signed copies of her book, I Am Because We Are: African Wisdom in Image and Word, and talked with visitors about her time in Africa as a photographer.  She said she was honored to be a part of the Maroon Edition Events because she knew Wangari Maathai, the author of this year’s selected book.

Press, who was wearing an authentic, handmade Indigo garment, said she and her husband would be in the area for a few days to work on her next project.  She has received a grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission to photograph the sate.

She will also be back for the Society of Photographic Education Conference, which will be hosted at MSU from Oct. 25-28.

The exhibit, Betty Press: African Wisdom in Image and Word, is presented by the Department of Art and the Maroon Edition and will be on display through Oct. 13 in the Colvard Student Union.

The exhibit features a selection of black and white photographs taken all over East and West Africa by Betty Press. These works are part of a
larger collection published in her book, which can be purchased at Barnes and Noble on campus.
