Ian Childers, ceramic artist from Philadephia, Pa., recently spent a day with Professor and Ceramics Emphasis Coordinator Robert Long’s ceramics classes at Mississippi State.

Childers, who is currently an assistant professor of art at the University for Women in Columbus, demonstrated his personal technique of throwing and then applying thick layers of slip, which he manipulates into lush beautiful flowing patterns and textures.

Childers is nationally known for his rich, crystalline glazed forms and demonstrated throwing this signature vase/bottle shape, which uniquely articulates his glazing style.

During the day students where able to enjoy firsthand the dozen or more pieces brought fresh from the kiln Childers unloaded the day before.
