Designer and Field Notes inventor Aaron Draplin held a two-hour workshop for MSU graphic design students on Thurs., Jan. 30.

Draplin began by introducing himself and giving students a brief history about his life before he started Draplin Design Company in 2004.

Then, he asked students to throw out names of local companies they all know and love. The students told him about Chalet, a Starkville arts supply store. So, Draplin split the class up into six groups and walked them through the process of creating a new logo for the store.

The groups each has ten minutes to do some research and were then given some time to sketch ideas.

Draplin told the students “to be open to magic”

“Sometimes,” he said, “the coolest things I make are the first sketch I make.”

Next, students were given time to vector their favorite sketch.

Draplin visited the groups throughout the process, giving them tips and pointers along the way.

“Everything should have a rationale,” he told one group, explaining that they should be able to sell the logo to the client.

“Don’t use the word ‘like,'” he added. “Use the word successful.”

After a short time, the students put their designs all on one table, and Draplin discussed the various qualities, both good and bad, about the logos.

“Isn’t it cool that 40 people did this in just one and a half hours?” he said, looking at the 13 different logo designs. “It’s pretty impressive.”

Draplin wrapped up the workshop by showing the students some of his work and discussing his process. He also encouraged students, telling them how much he enjoys his job.

“I’m always working,” he said, “But we GET to do that! I love making logos.”

Students left with various DDC swag, ranging from an envelope opener to a pill box.
