“Last Birthday” | Marita Gootee

Professor Marita Gootee recently had a photograph selected into “The Visual Narrative” at the The Mpls Photo Center in Minneapolis, Minn.

Gootee’s digital photograph titled “Last Birthday” was selected by the juror Susan Burnstine. There were 1200 images submitted, and Burnstine narrowed it down to 70 images for the exhibition and a book of the exhibition.

“The final selections span every genre, but the common denominator is that they reveal an aspect of the photographer’s personality and perspective in an authentic manner,” said Burnstine. “In effect, these photographs ask more questions than provide answers, which is the essential ingredient in creating meaningful images.”

The image is from Gootee’s recent series, “Talking to Ghosts,” in which she photographed the decline of her mother in the final six months of her life. Images were taken with an iPad.

“I felt that a large camera would be invasive for mom.” said Gootee. “This was personal, and the iPad kept it personal.” She added, “I find it is interesting the exhibit closes on my mother’s birthday. I think she would have enjoyed that irony.”

“The Visual Narrative” will be on display from March 14to April 28.
