Andrew Yerger, a senior photography student, was selected to receive the spring 2014 Grahame Brooke Snider Endowed Photography Travel Award. The $1,000 award was presented to Yerger on Feb. 6 by the photography concentration in the Department of Art at Mississippi State University.

This award was established to encourage creative visual research in the photographic field through travel to conferences, libraries, collections, museums, workshops and more. This semester’s funds are intended to be used to further Yerger’s knowledge of photography by allowing him to attend a National Geographic Expedition Workshop in New Orleans.

“I think this would be an extremely valuable learning experience for me to work along side an experienced photojournalist,” said Yerger. “Working at National Geographic is a dream job of mine, and to be able to spend four days working with a National Geographic photographer would be an amazing, once-in-a-lifetime experience.”

This award was established in memory of Grahame Brooke Snider who was a student in the photography concentration in the Department of Art at Mississippi State University from 2006-2010. (Read more about the award here.)

“Grahame lived and love photography. She absorbed all she could by attending photographic workshops and conferences,” states Professor Marita Gootee. “This award is in honor of Grahame’s passion for photographic knowledge and to provide others the opportunity to develop their passion for photography through travel. I have no doubt that Andrew will gain so much from the National Geographic Expedition Workshop. He will be inspired, and that is the purpose of this award.”

The Grahame Brooke Snider Endowed Photography Travel Award is presented up to twice a year to students in the photography concentration. The next call for applications will take place in fall 2014. For more information, contact Gootee at mgootee@caad.msstate.edu.
