Department of Art professors win international typography excellence awards

CA_AwardOfExcellence_WebsmallCommunication Arts, a professional journal for those involved in creativity in visual communications, has published the results of its fourth annual typography competition, the most exclusive major typography competition in the world. Department of Art graphic design professors Jamie Burwell Mixon and Jude Landry have won Awards of Excellence in CA’s Typography Annual 4.

Of the 1,498 entries submitted to the fourth annual typography competition, only 152 were selected by a jury of respected creative professionals, representing the work of 132 type designers, hand-letterers, design firms, agencies, publishers and in-house creative departments.


Mixon’s Award of Excellence is for her concert poster created for the Verizon Arena performance of the singer, Pink. Mixon’s design features original illustration and hand lettering.


Landry was recognized for his “United States of America” shirt design featuring his original hand lettering.

A series of posters created by BFA graphic design alumna, Carolyn Sewell, is featured as well. She currently lives and works as a designer in Washington, D.C.

Jurors were: Roberto de Vicq de Cumptich, de Vicq design, New York, NY; Sibylle Hagmann, Kontour, Houston, Texas; Erik Marinovich, Friends of Type, San Francisco, Calif.

The selected projects are featured in Typography Annual 4, the January/February 2014 issue of Communication Arts, both in print and on the iPad and online. With the largest international circulation of any trade journal on visual communications, having work selected is considered a significant professional milestone to the creators and publishers of these award-winning projects.
