Each year, the Mississippi State University Alumni Association selects distinguished alumni to represent each of its eight academic colleges.

The 2013 Alumni Fellow class was honored on campus from Nov. 14-16, ending with recognition at the MSU vs. Alabama football game.

Amie Oliver (BA, May 1982) was selected as the College of Architecture, Art and Design’s 2013 Alumni Fellow.

Oliver spoke to the college’s Dean’s Council students on Nov. 14, telling them about her career and offering advice.

Oliver also spoke the following day to a room full of students from all over the college.

The self-described “recovering academic” taught in the Department of Art at MSU from 1998 to 1999.

“I learned every single thing that I needed to be an artist right here at MSU,” said Oliver. “And some of the most delightful experiences in my life were right here in this town.”

Oliver showed her current body of work and discussed some of the various influences on her work throughout the years, including her time at the Virginia Atelier at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris.

“It changed my life,” she said, so she plans to help initiate a Mississippi Atelier that would enable faculty, students and alumni to pursue creative research in a private studio in Paris.
