Students in Assistant Professor Neil Callander’s Design II class presented their Barn Quilt paintings on Tues., April 26.

The Barn Quilt Project is a collaboration between Callander’s class, the Starkville Area Arts Council and community sponsors.

To date, MSU art students have created 17 original barn quilts, which constitute a major portion of the growing Oktibbeha County Barn Quilt Trail.

A special thanks to this year’s community sponsors Don and Leslie Fye, Laura-Lee Cobb, US Lawns and the MSU Department of Art.  Also, thanks goes to Oktibbeha County Barn Quilt Trail organizer Vicki Burnett.

Professor Alex Bostic, Assistant Professor Neil Callander and senior art student Thomas McBoom were all part of the “Red Clay Survey: 2014 Exhibition of Contemporary Southern Art” at the Huntsville Museum of Art.

An Artist Award Ceremony was held on August 16. Callander was honored with a Merit Award, and Bostic received a Museum Purchase Award. (View photos from the ceremony on facebook).

The exhibit juror was painter and educator Susanna Coffey of New York City.

Initiated in 1988, the Red Clay Survey is a recurring juried exhibition open to established and emerging artists in 11 Southern states. The survey “takes the pulse” of current art through a selection of works determined by a juror with strong national credentials. The series intends to recognize and encourage excellence, and provide a permanent record of the development of regional art through the publication of a comprehensive exhibition catalogue.

Exhibit sponsors included Alice Chang, Susan and Robert Kuehlthau, Jean and Jerre Penney, Progress Bank, Kelly and Randy Schrimsher, Anne and Ed Uher and Huntsville Museum of Art Docents.

Students in Assistant Professor Neil Callander’s Design I course were challenged to create a series of road signs that represent various social and political issues for their final project of the semester.

Students installed the work in front of the Colvard Student Union for the campus to view and contemplate. The work will be on display until Dec. 11.

This is the second year Callander has done this project with students at MSU, and, unfortunately, last year’s work was stolen just a day after it was installed in front of the Department of Art facilities.

See last year’s projects.
