The Windgate Charitable Foundation has issued a challenge gift to the Mississippi State University Department of Art. Windgate has agreed to match funds the department is able to raise from now through January 2015 – up to $100,000.

If the challenge is met, a total of $200,000 will be secured to create an Endowed Excellence Fund for the Department of Art that can be used for materials, equipment, faculty development, student field trips and guest lecturers. This endowment would create eight times the funds currently available to the department annually from private support.

Jamie Burwell Mixon, interim department head, views the challenge as an exciting opportunity to engage those who have supported the department in the past as well as those that have considered supporting art at MSU.

“It’s a win-win situation when a gift will be matched dollar-for-dollar through the generosity of the Windgate Foundation,” she said. “These funds will go directly into supporting our program and students.”

Mixon said the Department of Art at MSU strives to maintain its reputation as a leading program in the visual arts, preparing students for the job market or the pursuit of graduate studies after completion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in their respective disciplines.

“In fact, we’ve just received word that, for the third year in a row, our students have dominated the number of works accepted in the annual Mississippi Collegiate Art Competition,” said Mixon. “Out of 124 works accepted from eight universities this year, 35 of them were from MSU.”

“We have the largest art program in the state and clearly have an excellent BFA program; with adequate funding, the potential impact of art at MSU widens considerably.”

The Windgate Charitable Foundation is an independent foundation based in Siloam Springs, Ark. The foundation supports programs focused on arts and crafts, among others.
