Professor William Riehm recently teamed up with English graduate student Caroline Baker to tie literacy into design.  The two took sophomores in the Interior Design Program on a quick, overnight trip to New Orleans, La., to help with the YMCA Educational Services (YES!) adult literacy program.

The group spent a morning at the YMCA of Greater New Orleans to help with its adult literacy program, which services the lowest readers in the community. They were also able to visit the new space for the program at the New Orleans Public Library to do client interviews.

The students also took advantage of this opportunity to gain knowledge in interior design, though it was a short trip.

They had dinner at Mother’s Restaurant with recent graduate Caroline Cummins, who works for Lisambience Interior Design in Metairie, and Ellen Waguespack, a project Manager for the city.  The students were able to ask questions and get advice and encouragement.  After dinner, they toured the French Quarter, visited Café Du Mond and were even able to visit some spaces Riehm and some of his friends had designed.

The trip also included a look at some hotel lobbies to see some current trends in interior design and a tour of Eskew+Dumez+ Ripple. The sophomores were able to meet the designer for the firm’s new Interior Environments Studio, Dru Lamb, and also met with Steve Dumez, the firm’s overall director of design.

The last stop was the Make It Right house in the Lower Ninth Ward. Make It Right builds healthy homes, buildings and communities for people in need.

The trip was a success, and the students enjoyed being able to help others while gaining a valuable experience for their futures in design.

Juniors in the Interior Design Program had a chance to visit Merchandise Mart in Chicago.

Eleven juniors in the Interior Design program recently went to Chicago, Ill.  The goal of the trip was for students to visit firms and industry partners and to participate in other activities meant to enhance their learning experience.  They visited the Art Institute, explored numerous interior spaces and went on an architectural boat tour that explained how Chicago’s architecture played into the city’s growth after The Great Fire.
