WordmarkFred Oberkircher, an internationally respected lighting engineer, visited Mississippi State University recently.

Oberkircher presented “The IES (Illuminating Engineering Society) and Disruption Affecting the Lighting Industry” at 1 p.m. on Thurs., Feb. 27 to a full audience in the Robert and Freda Harrison Auditorium.

During the visit, he also hosted Tau Sigma Delta’s Friday Forum Lecture on Fri., Feb. 28 in the Michael Fazio Jury Room in Giles Hall.

Lecture topics included identifying the key changes in IES’ search to identify light; comparing significant metrics used; analyzing the current state of evolving disruptive technology; and predicting the effects of these disruptions to the future of light.

A certified lighting practitioner, Oberkircher is a former IES president and was named an IES Fellow in 2006. He is an associate professor emeritus at Texas Christian University who received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in architecture from Pennsylvania State University.

In addition to membership in the International Association of Lighting Designers, he serves on the board of directors of the Nuckolls Fund for Lighting Education, which supports postsecondary study of lighting and design.

Interior Design’s Philips Color and Lighting Studio (sponsored by Philips of Tupelo) made Oberkircher’s Thursday lecture possible.
