The Third Annual Brick Industry Association Student Design Competition was held this spring 2014 semester.

For the competition, student teams composed of third-year students from the School of Architecture and the Building Construction Science Program were tasked with designing a new fire station for the Lowndes County Volunteer Fire Department in Caledonia. The students worked with faculty and a collection of volunteer firefighters, professional architects and professional constructors to develop their projects.

Two student teams were honored following Jury Review presentations on April 30.

The winning team, whose members will each receive $800, was composed of Carter Brown, ARC, Patrick Brown, ARC, Bryan Marks, BCS, and Casey Walker, ARC.

Honorable mention went to Ryan Mura, ARC, Allie Salas, BCS, Mary Sanders, ARC, and Hannah Waycaster, ARC.

The judges for the competition included John Beard, AIA and Dale Riser, AIA, LEED AP BD+C of Beard + Riser Architects in Greenwood; John Anderson, AIA LEED-AP and Allison Anderson, AIA LEED-AP of Unabridged Architecture in Bay St. Louis; Mike Grote of the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio and Tulane University; Glen Clapper from the Brick Industry Association Southeast Region; and Mark Spears, the Fire Chief for District #3 of the Lowndes County Fire Service.

Additional reviewers of the student work throughout the semester included School of Architecture alumnus Ryan Florriech, AIA, NCARB of JBHM Architecture in Jackson; and Tim Younger and Sammy Fondren also with the Lowndes County Fire Service.

School of Architecture Assistant Professor Alexis Gregory, AIA, studio coordinator,  Building Construction Science Program Assistant Professor Tom Leathem and School of Architecture Assistant Professor Emily McGlohn organized, coordinated and taught the Spring Collaborative Studio.
