Spring 2020 Building Construction Science First-Year Studio Field Trip
Students and faculty from the first-year Building Construction Science studio at Mississippi State University recently traveled to Atlanta for a field trip.
On Friday, Feb. 28, students visited three sites with Brasfield and Gorrie General Contractors.
- Site #1: Piedmont Atlanta Hospital and Heartis Buckhead – Senior Living Facility.
The group began with a tour of Piedmont's boiler room and worked their way to the roof where they viewed the facility's helicopter pad. They then made their way back to the ground with several stops along the way. Next, they went across the street to view the construction of the Heartis Buckhead Senor Living Facility. - Site #2: Brasfield and Gorrie Office Visit
Students toured the office building and were welcomed to the break room, aka "The Bunker" for lunch. - Site #3: Job Site Visit to thyssenkrupp's Test Tower and Three Ballpark Center
Students saw the freestanding elevator shafts under construction.
On Sat., Feb. 29, students visited two more sites with B & W Mechanical Contractors.
- Site #1: Atlantic Station
The group saw formwork and concrete. - Site #2: T3
Students toured the building, which was built with wooden columns and floors (timber-frame construction).
Field trips are an important component to a student's education in the College of Architecture, Art and Design, allowing for students to travel to metropolitan areas to meet and network with professionals, visit sites, and observe urban environments.
