Realizing the Mirror Perch Bridge at the Crosby Arboretum

This program will explore the collaborative and integrated design issues associated with the realization of the Mirror Perch Bridge at the Crosby Arboretum Gum Pond Exhibit. Professor Hans C. Herrmann, AIA, will discuss his role in leading the project development, design and realization processes of the Mirror Perch Bridge via academic coursework and volunteer organization initiatives.

Learning Objectives

1. Guests will learn about the collaborative design process that considered the site's physical and historical context, restrictive/minimal budget and skill-limited design and construction workforce in a physically challenging swamp-forest site.
2. A critical review of material and design choices that contribute to the structures' safety, sustainability and material efficiency.
3. Outlining concepts for organizing the pro bono design and realization of structures in culturally or historically significant settings.
4. Understand how the project addresses sustainability as a core value through its choice of materials, its orientation, its spatial relation to its environment

Presenter

Hans C. Herrmann, AIA, LEED Green Assoc., NCARB, is an associate professor of architecture at Mississippi State University focusing on foundational design, comprehensive / integrative design, and building technology.

Before entering academia, professor Herrmann practiced with several southeastern and east coast practices including the firm of Ike Kligerman Barkley, an Architectural Digest Top 100 design firm located in New York City. While practicing in New York, professor Herrmann completed numerous residential and institutional projects with locations ranging from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts, to San Francisco, California, and Miami Beach, Florida. As a licensed architect in the state of New York, his professional interest is on issues of residential construction and the role of architectural renovation as a sustainable form of practice.

Herrmann currently maintains his own design practice as the sole practitioner of H.Herrmann resDesign, an interdisciplinary practice offering full-scope design services.
