The MSU Department of Art and the Starkville Oktibbeha School District PTO celebrate the artistic talents of Pre-K through 12th grade students with the annual Buzzy's Art Contest.

This online exhibition features original award winning works of art by students in the Starkville Oktibbeha School District. Works are submitted into three categories: Creative WritingDrawing & Painting, and Photography. Each Creative Writing submission is analyzed and reviewed by a guest juror from the MSU Department of English. Judging criteria includes ranking each Creative Writing submission based on the level of Originality, Creative Expression, Organization, and Use of Language. Each fine art work (Drawing & Painting and Photography) is analyzed and reviewed by a guest juror from the MSU Department of Art faculty. Judging criteria includes ranking each work based on the level of Completeness, Skill, Creativity, and Composition. Awards include Best in Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Places, plus Honorable Mentions. The types and number of awards for each category are different depending on the number of entries for each school and grade.

In addition to this year’s new virtual gallery, we are very pleased to announce a public in-person exhibit being planned for April 5-16th! Through a wonderful partnership between the Starkville Oktibbeha School District, Mississippi State University, and the Starkville Area Arts Council, there will be two public exhibition displays of printed versions of the electronically submitted Buzzy Art Contest winning pieces.

The Buzzy Photography award winners’ pieces will be on public display at the MSU Visual Arts Center Gallery (808 University Drive, open Monday–Friday 1pm–6pm, Saturday 1–4pm), and the Buzzy Painting & Drawing award winners’ (Best in Show, 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners) artwork will be exhibited at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership Welcome Center building on Main Street (Main Street & Lafayette, Downtown Starkville, open Monday–Friday 8am–5pm). This special exhibition is made possible by a generous sponsorship from Cadence Bank.
