A second-year student in Mississippi State’s College of Architecture, Art and Design is receiving major recognition from the state’s most diverse construction trade association.

Jalyn R. Wallin of Double Springs, Alabama, is a 2017 selection for a $2,000 scholarship from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Mississippi Chapter, which annually provides scholarships to building construction students at Mississippi State University and the University of Southern Mississippi.

A sophomore building construction science major, Wallin is a member of the ABC Student Chapter at MSU.

Also a participant in the university’s Day One Leadership Program, Wallin helped this past fall with constructing benches, painting buildings and purchasing a fire pit for a local Boy Scout camp.

Outside of MSU, Wallin enjoys volunteering in the community with such organizations as Relay for Life, Habitat for Humanity and Toys for Tots. Last summer, she assisted Habitat for Humanity with construction of a one-story residential facility and a separate storage shed.

Wallin also will be receiving a $1,000 Brislin Inc. Annual Scholarship for the upcoming academic year.

“These scholarships mean a lot to me because I can help my parents pay for my college tuition, and helping pay for my tuition is getting me closer to reaching my academic goals,” she said.

As for her future goals, Wallin said she would like to own a construction company or work in a top position in the construction industry.

Founded in 1973, ABC Mississippi is positioned as one of the largest ABC chapters in the nation. Its membership represents all specialties within the U.S. construction industry and is primarily comprised of firms that work in the industrial and commercial sectors. Offered by the College of Architecture, Art and Design, Mississippi State’s building construction science academic curriculum is one of only two such studio-based programs in the country.

MSU is Mississippi’s leading university, available online at www.msstate.edu.
