Undulation
My paintings are self-portraits that begin with current and childhood photos. Each reference has been cropped and manipulated to make an abstracted and unsettling image. The paintings are made in layers with acrylic paint poured on top of pre cut contact paper stencil. Each painting is 48“x60“ and has 3 to 4 layers of paint. They are imposing in size and color.
Each painting has a vibrant color as its first layer. This is done to provide an intense contrast against the following layers which are warm or cool greys. This method allows me to achieve an abstract quality while maintaining concrete form with the subject. The color contrast, poured, and stenciled paint reflect control and unpredictability. This series is a representation of the complexity of identity.
