Without realizing it we make assumptions about the world around us every day. Often times we share those assumptions with those around us and present others with our perceptions and experiences. But how much of an effect does what we share have on the perceptions of others. How does what we say influence those around us. How have we been influenced by others? This work is about becoming more aware and conscious about our own perceptions. I know that all throughout my life I have been affected by how people perceive me based on information they were presented by others. Whether we intend to or not, the words we say about others can and will affect how people perceive that person.

By using a video clip format, I create a moment that is incomplete. Not a full narrative yet not a still image. It represents the fragmented information we observe of the lives of others and creates a lack of context to the bigger story. Thus, allowing for the viewer to build make their own inferences about the character they see.

That this work is an excellent opportunity to bring to light the power of our words. It is important that we begin to evaluate the things we say and how even the smallest statements we make can affect how someone else may view a person’s situation.

Bio:

J. Hun-En Joswick was born in Louisville, Kentucky. However, having been a military child, he has little memory or connection to the city. Growing up, he became very accustomed to moving across the world every few years. He graduated high school in 2016 and began his education at Mississippi State University that fall. He changed majors multiple times, setting himself back, until finally landing in photography where he found his passion to be. Joswick’s greatest interest is in the world of film and cinema. His education has created opportunities for him to work on film sets both professional and amateur resulting in multiple film awards and accreditations. He has also served as a judge in the Magnolia Independent Film Festival. Joswick is a cadet in Air Force ROTC and upon his completion of his degree he will be commissioned into the United States Air Force as a Combat Systems Officer. Upon completion of his service, he hopes to begin working in the film industry, a dream of his since he was young.
