The Divine Women
The Divine Nine, a group of historically Black-American sororities and fraternities, promote academic success, scholarship, and service. By interacting with this community, I was able to get a better understanding of why these men and women join these organizations. I am particularly influenced and inspired by the historically Black sororities of the Divine Nine. My show honors these women through portraiture. My Aunt’s organization, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc., helped her transition into a successful Black woman. It was not the color or the sorority letters that piqued my interest in Black Greek art; it was seeing my Aunt become more confident, determined, patient, and intuitive. From their strolls and callings to their colors and designs, the women of the Divine Nine have influenced popular dances, clothing lines, and campus life. Each portrait represents how I view these strong, Black, powerful, women.
