Heroes
The work presented is a collection of oil paintings with individual subjects addressing social issues that relate to contemporary, Black American culture. An amalgamation of blockbusting, comic book characters are referenced through their respective costumes to parallel their fictional stories and is heroized by popular Black American celebrities. The scale of each piece is 39 in. x 30 in., the standard size for movie posters. The color palette of each is mostly blue and references to the blue period, and also there are warm, saturated highlights of color to imply light sources in a stylistic approach that supports my naturally colorblind perception. The depicted celebrities are former President Barack Obama as Captain America, pro football quarterback Colin Kaepernick as Spiderman, and rappers Jaz-Z and Yo Gotti as Magneto and Bishop from X-Men.
