Between In-between
Thesis Statement
I am a painter creating surreal landscapes. Through each space I explore methods of archiving to find layered, indescribable memories and give them form through illusory representation. The paintings exist as the transient gap between any two ideas, an action and reaction, the time between the seen and the forgotten. Painting is a kind of problem solving that I use to engage ideas deeply rooted in the subconscious. To paint is to physically preserve time, yet the passage of time simultaneously affects the painting. That cycle drives me to weave these artificial subjects into alternative, abandoned surfaces creating a juxtaposition of ephemeral media with the traditional archive. The work is both abandoned and revitalized, abstract yet tangible, and through depth I create spaces that expose the change within memories. Whether digital or biological, memories are in a constant state of imperceptible change. Time selfishly flies and crawls through our lives, and in turn we are left to navigate our subconscious alone and transformed. What might be a physically felt memory could also be a vivid dream, and in turn what could be original data might be altered or corrupted. Through these memories I find, I take compositional moments and juxtapose them with a format that subverts the original space intensely through dense, formal disfigurations. Each process envelops many matrices of archive that function as a psychological cleft into the subconscious, deep memory.
